{"id":4528,"date":"2021-06-16T10:50:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-16T10:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vistaar.ai\/?p=4528"},"modified":"2024-07-01T06:13:07","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T06:13:07","slug":"serotonergic-anti-depressants-for-depression-in-pregnant-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stage-websites.ddismart.com\/vistaar\/blog\/serotonergic-anti-depressants-for-depression-in-pregnant-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Serotonergic Anti-depressants for Depression in Pregnant Women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ee33398a6e608484cfad5bc2d15e62fe wp-block-paragraph\">New Zealand\u2019s Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority (MEDSAFE) has published few takeaways pertaining to the new minimal risk of postpartum haemorrhage with the consumption of certain anti-depressants for would-be mothers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The key takeaways from this are:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-block-list wp-elements-1407a5d4a7e235d8b678d19bdfc4dfa0\">\n<li>When selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are used during the month leading up to delivery, observational studies have demonstrated a slight increased risk of postpartum haemorrhage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With this new mild risk of postpartum bleeding, healthcare providers should continue to evaluate the benefits of treating depression for the mother.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5e23948d9634a24efde5c0ee784ace07\"><strong>MARC\u2019s Evaluation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f99d7cc0845dce051fea5e462740767c wp-block-paragraph\">In March 2021, during their 185<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;meeting, the Medicines Adverse Reactions Committee (MARC) evaluated the risk of postpartum haemorrhage with the usage of SSRIs (citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, sertraline and paroxetine) and SNRIs (venlafaxine) during the month just prior to delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fb6f56515044996ae5c6f2c9f90acbd2 wp-block-paragraph\">As serotonin affects platelet function, the MARC concluded that a higher risk of postpartum haemorrhage was biologically feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-522a3478a30434fb3deaa82b6f124d84 wp-block-paragraph\">Deeper inspections suggest that a minimal amount of risk (lesser than even a two-fold increase) is possible with the use of SSRIs and SNRIs during the last trimester. The application of vortioxetine, which is a newer anti-depressant too shows similar risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9321d23e085da3aecda1e1b454c4dd71 wp-block-paragraph\">The rise in absolute risk of postpartum haemorrhage is still small. Studies have made it clear that if 80 to 100 pregnant women are consuming this anti-depressant just a month before their pregnancy, there might be only a single rise in the number of postpartum haemorrhage cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a031695fe1c9192f6d8413202b0f5fee\"><strong>Review and Updates<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cc26538260720242c55c3892dd820f2f wp-block-paragraph\">A systematic review published in 2015 found that none of the research included in the review had information on the exact volume of blood loss or the clinical and therapeutic effects of the blood loss (such as transfusion and prolonged hospital stay).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fbe8ce746380916b5441e515e0674bb0 wp-block-paragraph\">As per these details that are available healthcare professionals are being constantly reminded to continue to evaluate and re-evaluate the benefits of treating depression for the mother with this new, minimal risk of postpartum
